Introduction

New England is well known across the United States and around the world as a stunning and distinctly American region rich in history, culture and natural beauty. The region presents distinct seasonal personalities, which makes it even more attractive.

In fall (autumn) New England is famous for its glorious foliage as billions of leaves change from green to a kaleidoscope of colors. Besides, touring through New England in search of autumn’s changing colors has become such a popular activity, it has sprouted its own enthusiastic subculture of ‘leaf-peepers’. But this trip is about much more than just flora and fauna: become immersed in the bountiful harvest spirit that envelops the entire region each fall. Peak fall foliage season starts at the beginning of September and runs through to the end of October.

New England is located in the north-eastern corner of the United States consisting of the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. New England is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Canada, and the state of New York.

Maine

Visit beautiful Maine’s state - the northernmost state in New England. From the first hint of spring through the lazy days of summer Maine is an outdoor wonderland. Maine's coast is a muddle of rocks, islands and fjords where you can spot a majestic moose while camping or hiking. Otherwise, you can relax at one of Maine’s sandy beaches. Spring in Maine is everything you’d expect and so much more. There are many different ways to explore the stunning coast’s of Maine and its gorgeous mountains, woods, sparkling rivers and lakes, such as by kayak, bike or seaplane. Main attractions in the Maine region are Nubble Light House, which is the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and Acadia National Park - New England only National Park.

 

New Hampshire

New Hampshire is home to the White Mountains and Lake Winnipesaukee. The White Mountains are said to have the most rocky and stunning landscape in New England. While many associate the area with powdery ski slopes its warm-weather alternatives hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, which makes the White Mountains an attractive destination year-round. Main Attractions in New Hampshire Region are Canterbury Shaker Village, which is an Open-air Museum the Shaker sect with original buildings, Mount Washington - the highest mountain the U.S. Northeast and Strawbery Banke Museum.

 

Vermont

Silent and isolated, modest and a bit rebellious - this is Vermont. Once more, the state is famous for its natural beauty and stunning green mountains. As mountain ranges go the Green Mountains are very old and have been sculpted to their present form during several ice ages. Granite, marble, slate, asbestos and talc have all been mined from the range. Main Attractions in Vermont Region are Billings Farm & Museum, Lake Champlain, and Vermont Country Store in Weston.

 

Massachusetts

Massachusetts is a lively and diverse state geographically. What’s more, it offers a wealth of history and culture. Starting in the Colonial period with the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth, to the civil disobedience of the Boston Tea Party, to the beginnings of the Revolutionary War at the towns of Concord and Lexington, Massachusetts has always figured prominently in the activities of America. In addition, Massachusetts is the heart of New England and it is famous for Boston and Cape Cod.

Boston isthe economic centre of the Northeast and it is excellent for romantic getaways, offering a variety of hotels, museums, and superb dining. And don’t forget the world-class Red Sox baseball team at Fenway Park. Visit Boston Aquarium, the Museum of Science, or the Museum of Fine Arts. To really get an insight into early American history take a walk on the Freedom Trail where you will see landmarks of which include the Boston Common, one of the country's oldest public parks, the Granary Burying Ground, the Old North Church, and the USS Constitution.

By contrast, Cape Cod is a dreamy paradise. It is a place for the outdoors, beaches, whale-watching and family fun. The Cape Cod has hotels Inns, motels, waterfront resorts, camping, RV parks and lodgings for romantic getaways for every taste. Offshore are the pretty islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket easily accessible by ferry.

 

Connecticut

Connecticut is another must visit state in New England. Connecticut's quiet villages set its type and it’s the respectable residents are the essence of New England life. As the southernmost state in New England, New York, bordering both are closely linked. Main Attractions in Connecticut Region are Mystic Aquarium, Aquarium Institute for Marine Research of Titanic discoverer, Mark Twain House and Sheffield Iceland Lighthouse.

 

Rhode Island

Rhode Island is as tiny as exclusive. It is the smallest state in New England nestled in the charming Narangasett Bay. America's upper class has chosen this coast as an early summer vacation. The overflowing historic mansions of Newport are a luxury landmark in the state. Little Rhode is packed with 400 miles of coastline and 20 percent of the country’s historic landmarks.

Newport is the sailing capital of the world and home to the famed Gilded Age mansions. Providence’s famous restaurants, award-winning theatre, and vibrant arts scene is enhanced by an elaborate river-walk. Main Attractions in Rhode Island are The Breakers - the summer palace of the Vanderbilt and one of many homes in Newport, Block Iceland - natural recovery in the beautiful island and Fort Adams State Park - once the greatest Stronghold on the U.S. coast.

Maine is definitely the outlet shopping capital of New England. You'll be amazed at the sheer number of name brand outlet stores that line Route 1 in Kittery, and Freeport is a popular outlet shopping destination as well. When you head for the outlets of New Hampshire, you actually have a chance to save not once, but twice. In New Hampshire, shopping is tax-free! Massachusetts is literally littered with outlet shopping possibilities. From the Berkshires to Boston and even Cape Cod, it's possible to plan an entire Massachusetts itinerary centered around bargain hunting. Canadian and American shoppers alike are drawn to the outlets of Vermont. You'll find the state's largest selection of designer deals in Manchester. Connecticut's upscale outlet centers are popular with Manhattanites seeking to save money on swanky name brand duds. Though tiny Rhode Island doesn't have any massive factory outlet complexes to call its own, you're just minutes from outlet centers in Massachusetts when you stay in either Newport or Providence.

Weather in New England Region

Weather patterns in New England vary throughout the region. Most of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont have a humid continental short summer climate, with mild summers and cold winters. Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Southern New Hampshire and Vermont, and Coastal Maine have a humid continental long summer climate, with warm summers and cold winters. Owing to thick deciduous forests, fall in New England brings bright and colorful foliage, which comes earlier than in other regions, attracting tourism by 'leaf peepers'. Springs are generally wet and cloudy.
